Felt Slipper Making

When we think of felt, shoe soles often come to mind. However, it has many areas of use, ranging from the automotive industry to clothing and tents, musical instruments, furniture, and home construction. In musical instruments, it is preferred to reduce vibrations, and when used in the automotive industry, it helps reduce vibrations between interior panels. In fashion, it is used for hats, jackets, details and embellishments, pillows, bags, wallets, shoes, and other garments. It has special molds used for shaping. When framing pictures, it is placed between the artwork and the frame, preventing the frame from damaging the picture.

Felt also holds an important place in footwear. For example, when wearing wool felt insoles, they reduce impact force on uneven surfaces compared to insoles made from other materials. Wool insoles naturally adapt to the shape of your foot, making them an ideal shoe accessory for outdoor activities such as walking or for long days when you need to stay on your feet.

Felt is considered one of the oldest known textile products. It is formed by the interlocking of fibers in an alkaline environment created with water, soap, and heat, using wool obtained from various animals (sheep, angora goat, llama, camel, rabbit, etc.). Since it is such an ancient product, there is no definite information about when it was first used. Because it can be used in almost every field, it still appears in many areas today. Recently, it has been frequently preferred in souvenir production and in the works of many artists.

Now let’s move on to how to make felt slippers at home.

First, look at felt slipper examples on Pinterest or design your own to decide how your handmade felt slippers should look, and check whether you have the necessary materials. If you have everything you need, you can start making your felt slippers. You can either purchase felt as ready-made soles or obtain flat felt fabric from fabric stores.

Materials for Making Felt Slippers

  • 1 pair of felt soles or a piece of felt
  • Scissors
  • Pen for marking
  • An old slipper (for taking measurements)
  • A piece of fabric (leather or velvet can be used)
  • Needle and thread
  • Sewing machine (if available)

Having felt soles slightly larger than your foot size will make your work easier.

Let’s start making your felt slippers.

Cut the fabric according to the size of the old slipper you are using as a reference. Don’t forget to leave seam allowance, as you will be sewing it.

Adjust the felt sole to your foot size and mark the edges with a pen.

Prepare your needle and thread and start sewing the fabric you previously cut along the marked lines.

And there you have it—you’ve made your own felt slippers at home.

Using this method, you can design and make slippers with different fabrics and colors. If you want a more professional result and have a sewing machine, you can use that as well. In your spare time, you can repurpose leftover fabrics by turning them into slippers and transform old items into new ones this way.
